Ceratophyllum demersum, commonly called hornwort, is one of the most versatile and widespread aquatic plants in aquariums and paludariums. It is characterized by its long, thin stems, covered with needle-like and delicate leaves, which create a natural and very decorative effect. Its growth is rapid and vigorous, making it one of the best allies in tank management.

Main characteristics

  • Rapid growth: absorbs nitrates and waste substances, helping to control algae.

  • Adaptability: it can be left to float freely or anchored to wood and rocks.

  • Resistance: it tolerates a wide range of temperatures (15–30°C) and is also suitable for tanks without CO₂ or intense lighting.

  • Biological function: produces oxygen and releases allelopathic substances that inhibit the growth of unwanted algae.

Uses in aquariums and paludariums

  • Breeding tanks: the dense structure provides excellent shelter for fry and small invertebrates, increasing their chances of survival.

  • Paludariums and natural tanks: ideal for creating floating or rooted green areas, contributing to biological balance and ecosystem stability.

  • Support for fish and invertebrates: shrimp and small fish find a perfect environment for grazing and protection among the dense branches.

  • Natural filter: improves water quality by reducing harmful substances and ensuring a healthier environment.

Cultivation tips

  • It does not need substrate: just put it in water.

  • It grows best with good lighting, but also adapts to moderate light conditions.

  • It can be easily pruned: cut fragments can give rise to new plants.

  • Perfect for established aquariums and for beginners, thanks to its robustness and ease of management.
